Boston weather: Summer heat, possible ‘severe’ thunderstorms incoming for Juneteenth

Boston weather is set to heat up in the coming week, with “strong to severe” thunderstorms likely to hit around Thursday, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“Heading into this week, I think the most notable weather feature we’ll have is a significant warm-up as we head into the middle part of the week,” said NWS meteorologist Torry Dooley. “But that’s also going to come with chances for thunderstorms towards the middle week.”

The week is set to kick of “fairly quiet,” Dooley said, with a continuation of the slightly cooler conditions Monday and Tuesday. Monday is expected to be a mostly sunny day with a high in the upper 60s, NWS forecasts.

Tuesday may warm up to a high in the low 70s and remain partly sunny throughout the day, forecasts show.

“There could be a spot shower Tuesday, Wednesday,” said Dooley. “It’s a pretty low chance, less than 20%. Those folks who may be traveling further out in the western part of the state have a somewhat better chance for seeing the spot shower on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Wednesday is forecasted to heat up even more, according to NWS.

“By Wednesday, we’re really going to feel a noticeable change in the temperatures,” said Dooley. “We’ll have a high temperature in Boston for Wednesday around the low 80s — 80 to 82 degrees. It is also going to come with higher humidity, so it’s definitely going to feel sticky, kind of that air you can wear.”

Temperatures are expected to peak for Juneteenth on Thursday, the NWS forecasts, reaching a high in the upper 80s. Thursday is also likely to feel “really humid” throughout the day, Dooley said.

“The best chance for any real precipitation should come in on Thursday with a pretty strong cold front,” said Dooley. “That cold front on Thursday may produce strong to severe thunderstorms, primarily in the late afternoon to early evening.”

The entire state is likely to be hit with the precipitation later in the day Thursday, the meteorologist said.

On Friday, temperatures are expected to cool some from Thursday’s peak to a “seasonably warm” high around the low 80s, Dooley said. Highs are preliminarily forecasted to remain around the low 80s through the weekend, NWS states, and skies may remain mostly sunny.

“Then way, way beyond our seven-day forecast, there are signs that this heat may return by early next week or the following week,” said Dooley.
