Democrats and AGs like Andrea Campbell who act as though they have a say in national policy have suffered a severe setback after the Supreme Court ruled against activist judges who were attempting to thwart President Trump.
HUGE SUCCESS, Minutes after the ruling, which restricts federal judges’ ability to use national injunctions to prevent the president’s executive orders, Trump posted.
At a press conference, Trump took a victory lap over the decision and remarked, “It’s a giant.”
The 6-3 decision prevented activist judges and, consequently, attorneys general from attempting to thwart Trump at every opportunity through legal actions and judicial decisions, but it did not decide whether Trump’s restriction on birthright citizenship was constitutional.
The decision was hailed as a devastating blow by stunned Democrats, who promptly took to press conferences and social media to protest about Trump and the high court.
One thing is clear from today’s decision in the birthright citizenship case: this administration’s attacks on our rights are not safe. It was part of a Markey fundraising email. Sen. Ed Markey wrote in a greatly inflated post.
Although Markey, who is up for reelection next year, is clearly vying to be the state’s most progressive leader, he is actually a member of the gerontocracy that younger Democrats are attempting to overthrow.
Other Democrats, including Campbell, expressed disappointment but pledged to fight for birthright citizenship.
Campbell, who joined other Democratic AGs in a lawsuit against Trump’s executive order, said, “We look forward to proving why nationwide relief in this case is necessary, as the court has invited us to do.”
AG Campbell, please stay in Massachusetts and carry out your duties of indicting criminals.
Campbell, a former Boston City Councilor, has been a major letdown. She hopes to equal Governor Maura Healey in the number of lawsuits brought against the president, but her ambitions to get involved in national politics have been severely hampered by the high court’s decision.
For months, Trump has publicly bemoaned the Democrats’ use of the legal system to limit his authority.
Through more than 40 injunctions from Democratic liberal judges in lower courts, Democrats have been able to successfully block a large portion of Trump’s program.
But those times might be coming to an end. They will need to come up with an alternative. A couple more No Kings rallies, perhaps?
Justice Amy Coney Barrett, one of the court’s six conservative justices, authored the high court ruling on Friday.
Babies born to illegal immigrants will continue to be considered citizens for at least 30 days, but the status of birthright citizenship is still up in the air.
