A terrible head-on collision on a highway bridge over the Annisquam River in Gloucester early in the morning left five people hurt, three of them gravely.
The Gloucester Fire Department said Monday that two men, one in his 80s and the other 18 years old, as well as a 19-year-old woman were classified in critical condition.
One car had been flipped onto its roof when police arrived at the site of the collision on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge on Route 128 at 1:45 a.m. Firefighters on the site had to free two people who were trapped in the cars.
Our community has been profoundly impacted by the tragic collision on the Route 128 bridge last night. In a statement, Gloucester Mayor Greg Verga stated, “My thoughts are with all those involved, and with their families, friends, and loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”
Since many of the individuals involved are not only Gloucester natives but also young people from our community, this strikes very close to heart. We are a city that genuinely cares, and we are all currently keeping the affected people close to our hearts.
After being rescued from a wrecked car, the 18-year-old male was taken to a secure landing area and transported by helicopter to a Boston hospital in critical condition, officials said.
Three further passengers were sent to Beverly Hospital: a guy in his 80s, two ladies, and a 19-year-old. After then, one of the 19-year-old women was taken in critical condition to Tufts Medical Center. The 80-year-old victim was sent in critical condition to Lahey Clinic in Burlington. After receiving treatment, the other woman—who was also 19—was freed.
An 18-year-old guy who was the fifth victim was taken from the site to Addison Gilbert Hospital, where he received medical attention before being allowed to go.
The Massachusetts State Police are still investigating the crash.
