Boston police sergeant charged with aggravated rape of 14-year-old

According to court documents made public on Monday, a Boston police sergeant has been charged with paying a 14-year-old for sex and committing aggravated rape after he discovered the child on the Grindr app.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox stated, “These charges are obviously very troubling, and our thoughts are with any alleged victims.” We trust the Suffolk DA and the Massachusetts State Police to carry out a comprehensive investigation.

Paul Downey, 58, of West Roxbury, was charged with four charges of child rape that was made worse by age difference, two counts of having sex with a kid for money, and two counts of luring a juvenile into having sex for profit.

Downey’s arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court was supposed to take place on Monday, but it was postponed because he did not have a defense attorney. The prosecution stated that he plans to request $250,000 in cash bail, and the officer was detained without it until his arraignment.

According to the BPD, Downey is a police sergeant who joined the force in 1991. According to Cox, the cop was put on administrative leave right away.

BPD did not immediately disclose any specifics regarding Cox’s assertion of multiple alleged victims, and the court record made public on Monday—a so-called statement of the case filed by the Suffolk DA’s office—only named one victim, a 14-year-old kid.

According to the case statement, Downey allegedly started corresponding with the victim via Snapchat after meeting her on the dating app Grindr on March 26. The police sergeant allegedly offered $30 for oral sex throughout the conversation.

According to the prosecution, Downey raped the youngster in the car after the victim and defendant met and drove to a parking area close to South Bay Mall in Dorchester. The victim was allegedly paid $50 by the police officer.

According to the statement, Downey allegedly kept messaging the boy for two months. According to the prosecution, Downey approached the victim once more on or around May 11 and discussed a fee of up to $80.

According to the records, the defendant subsequently reportedly paid the child the agreed upon sum and beat him in the same parking lot. Prosecutors claim that the victim tried to commit the license plate to memory after the alleged attack and gave detectives a number that was strikingly similar to Downey’s.

After receiving a description of the defendant and his vehicle from the victim, authorities looked into the Snapchat account’s usage history and linked it to Downey’s residence address, personal phone number, and a recognized IP address from the City of Boston.

According to the prosecutors, the victim recognized Downey with 90% certainty after being shown a photo array.

On Tuesday morning, Downey is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester Boston Municipal Court.
