How Drake Maye has surprised, impressed his new Patriots center

FOXBORO One vocal member of the Drake Maye fan group is Garrett Bradbury.

Following Friday’s training camp practice, the new Patriots center gushed about Maye’s maturity and demeanor.

Bradbury remarked, “It’s amazing how mature he is at such a young age.” I had to remind myself that he is 22 years old because I spent a lot of time with him this spring. He is, after all, light years ahead of me and the majority of rookies I’ve seen. He doesn’t act like he’s twenty-two in terms of his attitude and mindset. He is aware of how important his role is.

Before being cut this summer and moving to New England, Bradbury, 30, was Minnesota’s starting center for six seasons. He claimed that Maye frequently queries him about Kirk Cousins, the former quarterback for the Vikings.

Bradbury remarked, “He’s always picking my brain.” I spent a lot of time playing with Kirk Cousins, who is amazing. He performed everything correctly and is a pro. “What would Kirk think of this?” asks Maye. What had he done to prepare for this? I’m here to help him in whatever way I can since I believe everyone understands he has a bright future.

Bradbury has been pleased by Maye’s leadership and tact as a second-year professional.

From a leadership perspective, I’ve observed how he commands the huddle, calls up the team, and appropriately reprimands the offensive players, he added. You can’t go about yelling at guys and telling them what to do because, as I mentioned, he’s 22 and has played a few games. He thus perfectly toes that line. He is aware that, simply by virtue of your position, you have authority and a voice. Make the most of them to bring everyone together and advance the cause.

After agreeing to a two-year, $9.5 million contract, Bradbury is the Patriots’ favorite to start at center, but he will have to defeat third-round pick Jared Wilson. During his first NFL training camp, Wilson, who head coach Mike Vrabel described as a quick learner, saw notable reps at center and guard.

Bradbury remarked, “I believe that Vrabel enjoys competition the most.” As a football team, it’s the best thing you could have. It will improve me, it will improve him, and it will improve everyone. However, I’m not sure if I’ve ever been on a line where all five players played every snap for the entire season, so you also need to develop depth. Training camps are centered around the idea that the more talented football players you have, the more games you will win. Everyone must earn a position. You must earn that role, whatever it may be.
