43-Year-Old Man Sentenced for Slashing His Former Girlfriend in the Face With a Box Cutter and Stabbing Her at Her Workplace

After viciously assaulting his ex-girlfriend at work and seriously injuring her, a 43-year-old man was given a 38-year prison sentence.

In March, Rakien Figueroa, also called Rakeem Figueroa, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree assault, second-degree burglary, second-degree assault, and second-degree attempted murder.

Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn District Attorney, announced the sentence on July 23. The victim was seriously injured as a result of Figueroa’s aggressive conduct, and he will serve almost 40 years in prison for his crimes.

The Attack on December 2, 2022

When Figueroa stole his 39-year-old ex-girlfriend’s cellphone from her place of employment on December 2, 2022, the horrifying events started. The two then got into a heated dispute that swiftly got out of hand.

According to the prosecution, Figueroa used a box cutter to cut the victim’s face, resulting in a deep 8-inch cut that damaged nerves and glands and necessitated reconstructive surgery.

Figueroa had to wear an ankle monitor under federal supervision, but he left the scene of the attack and took it off.

A Second Attack at Her Home

Figueroa entered the victim’s New Jersey home and hid in her closet two days after the original assault. He allegedly threw a hammer out of the closet, knocked the woman to the ground, and put his boot to her throat when she and her sister arrived. It was evident that Figueroa’s brutal acts were far from ended as the victim gasped for air.

The Final Attack on January 10, 2023

Figueroa escalated his violent behavior on January 10, 2023. He used a rock to crush the victim’s workplace’s front door before repeatedly stabbing her with a knife.

The man was stabbed in the neck, face, arm, back, and kidney, among other potentially fatal wounds. She was taken to the hospital immediately and stayed in the surgical intensive care unit for three days.

Authorities found Figueroa after he ran from the scene. He was apprehended on January 17, 2023, after being discovered concealed in a family member’s closet.

The Sentence and Justice for the Victim

“This defendant carried out a campaign of terror against a woman who once cared for him, leaving her with devastating physical and emotional injuries,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez in his statement, denouncing Figueroa’s violent actions.

His repeated and vicious acts of assault demonstrated his total contempt for both the law and her life. He is being held responsible and will no longer be a threat to her or anybody else as a result of today’s sentencing.

Figueroa’s 38-year prison term gives the victim and her family a measure of justice. The sentence guarantees that Figueroa won’t hurt anybody else, even though the psychological and bodily wounds will take time to heal.
