Citing the media tycoon’s advanced age and physical state, President Donald Trump is requesting that a federal judge in Florida compel Rupert Murdoch to provide a deposition for the president’s lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal within 15 days.
In U.S. District Court in southern Florida, Trump filed a lawsuit on July 18 against the Murdoch-owned Journal for its coverage of the Republican president’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and alleged child sex trafficker who passed away in a New York jail in 2019 before going to trial.
Murdoch is 94 years old, is thought to have had multiple health scares in recent years, and is assumed to reside in New York, according to the president’s motion to the court on Monday.
According to Trump’s appeal to the court, these considerations collectively play a significant role in deciding that Murdoch would not be able to testify in person during the trial.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by a representative for Murdoch’s News Corp. According to Trump’s move, during a phone call, Murdoch’s attorney stated he would be against the endeavor.
