According to WPRI, a jet crash at Rhode Island’s Block Island State Airport on Wednesday claimed one life and injured two more.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the small plane landed at the airport at around 12:30 p.m. and crashed into surrounding trees. The aircraft had a single engine and was a Piper PA-28a.

According to a Facebook post by Block Island firemen, three persons were inside the aircraft when it crashed. Before transporting the three to a nearby hospital, emergency personnel had to liberate them.

Firefighters posted photos of the incident, which show the plane upside down and severely damaged.

According to WPRI, a 77-year-old man passed away while being taken to a hospital after the collision, according to New Shoreham police. Although they were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, the other two passengers on the aircraft are anticipated to live.

The plane made at least two attempts to land before crashing, according to police, but on the third try, it effectively ran out of runway, they told the television station. According to town officials, the collision only damaged the passengers onboard the plane, WPRI said.

The news station was informed by a representative of Albany International Airport in New York that the aircraft had departed the airport at 10:50 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Block Island State Airport. The plane was owned by the Condair Flyers Flying Club, a non-profit flying club with about 75 members situated at Albany Airport.

The crash is being looked into by the FAA. No other details, including the deceased’s name, have been made public.
