President Donald Trump said this afternoon on TruthSocial that he has directed the placement of two nuclear submarines in the proper areas, sending a terrifying message to Russia.
The president further stated that this follows former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s declaration this week that Moscow possesses nuclear attack capability from the Soviet era.
Trump responded today with the following post: In response to the extremely provocative remarks made by Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia and current deputy chairman of the Russian Federation’s Security Council, I have directed two nuclear submarines to be stationed in the relevant areas, in case these inflammatory and stupid remarks are more than that. Words have great power and frequently have unexpected repercussions. Hopefully, this won’t be one of those times. I appreciate you taking the time to look into this.
Trump’s directive comes at a sensitive time in the Trump administration’s relationship with Moscow, although it was not immediately obvious how it would affect U.S. nuclear submarines, which are regularly on patrol in hotspots across the world, according to the Associated Press.
According to the AP, Trump has threatened to impose further economic sanctions if Moscow does not agree to a truce in its war with Ukraine and stated that special envoy Steve Witkoff is traveling to Russia to do so. With that window expiring next week, he shortened his 50-day deadline for action to 10 days.
This is a tale that is evolving.
