Boston Cooper Criswell’s role as a swingman, who has been up and down from the minor levels multiple times this season, is to be prepared when called upon.
It is Criswell’s responsibility to contribute several innings or, as was the case Friday night, a spot start when the team needs him.
In theory, Garrett Crochet was scheduled to throw on Friday. However, the Red Sox decided last week to move their ace’s start date to Tuesday in order to give him more rest while he can.
Criswell took advantage of the fact that Richard Fitts was optioned for the recent road trip, creating a temporary vacancy in the rotation, and produced what was probably his second-best major league start to date. In a game that the Sox won 2-1 in 10 innings, Criswell gave up just one run while scattering seven hits over seven innings against the Houston Astros.
“Wow, wow,” exclaimed Alex Cora. He kept them off balance by using all of his fastballs. He did a fantastic job, and we needed that.
Criswell, who faced Astros All-Star righthander Hunter Brown, was on par with him this evening. Christian Walker’s single homer in the second inning was the only hit that hurt him.
It goes without saying that you want to give it your all on every outing so that your team has a chance to win, said Criswell. It’s obviously wonderful that we won Game 1 tonight because not many men did.
Criswell was able to take advantage of the aggressive attitude of the Astros, who frequently swung early in the count. He was able to be effective, averaging only a dozen pitchers each inning, and he got ahead by hitting the first ten batters he faced with first-pitch strikes.
Criswell stated, “I tried to keep sinkers away; I left a few over the middle of the plate; I know Pena got a few hits there.” According to the scouting report, several batters were hunting for stuff in. But the changeup and cutters away were both excellent.
Criswell was looking for an opportunity to start for Boston, whether it meant starting in Worcester or filling in for the parent club.
“I think I feel most at ease when I start,” he added. Additionally, I believe that I play every role possible to assist the team win. I’m willing to do everything they ask me to do. However, it is pleasant. I think I’ve been getting off to a terrific start in Worcester, so it was nice to have this opportunity.
