HOUSTON Before beginning a series in Houston on Monday night, the Red Sox are reorganizing their bullpen and making some roster changes.
According to several sources who spoke to MassLive, Boston has called up left-hander Jovani Morn from Triple-A Worcester. Before Monday’s game, the team also activated Ali Sanchez, a recently claimed catcher, off waivers.
To provide space for Morn and Sanchez, left-handed reliever Chris Murphy and utility player David Hamilton have been optioned.
In order to make room on the 40-man roster for Morn, Boston also designated righty Nick Burdi for assignment.
The Red Sox needed to activate Snchez, who they took off the Blue Jays’ waivers on Friday, because he has no further minor league options.
In eight games for the Blue Jays, Sanchez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan native, batted.238 (5-for-21) with a.238 on-base percentage and a.333 slugging percentage. He struck out five times and had two doubles and two runs scored but no RBIs. Additionally, he hit six home runs and seven doubles in 54 games (199 plate appearances) for Triple-A Buffalo this season, posting a.279/.347/.419/.766 line.
Over portions of four seasons (2020–21, 2024–25), he has appeared in 46 major league games for the Mets, Cardinals, Marlins, and Blue Jays. In his career, he has caught 10 out of 42 base stealers. He is an above-average blocker and has had good pop times.
Morn, a 28-year-old former Twins reliever, was acquired in the transaction that sent Mickey Gasper to Minnesota on Christmas Eve. After completing his Tommy John rehabilitation throughout the first several months of the season, Morn has made 12 appearances with the WooSox, recording a 3.44 ERA and striking out 26 batters in 18 innings.
Morn, a former Twins seventh-round pick in 2015, spent portions of three 2021–2023 seasons in the major leagues. After recording a 2.21 ERA and striking out 54 batters in 40 innings in 2022, he became a formidable force for Minnesota. Before undergoing Tommy John surgery during the winter, Morn had a difficult 2023 season with a 5.31 ERA in 43 major league appearances. During his rehabilitation, the Twins re-signed him and non-tendered him. In December, he was dealt as a non-40-man roster player.
After two games in the Florida Complex League and four more at High-A Greenville, Morn’s 2025 debut was postponed until June 3 due to the finish of his rehabilitation. On June 25, he joined Worcester.
Prior to being placed on the injured list due to a right foot contusion, Burdi, who signed a minor league contract during spring training, had four appearances for the Red Sox in May and June, throwing five scoreless innings. In 24 innings this season, he has a commanding 1.88 ERA and a 12.0 K/9 rate after being activated and returned to Triple-A Worcester.
Given his impressive Triple-A play, it is anticipated that the 32-year-old Burdi would attract interest on waivers.
In 69 games (143 plate appearances), Hamilton has struggled greatly this season, batting 23-for-132 (.174) with a.227 on-base percentage and a.265 slugging percentage. He was caught out stealing second base in the eighth inning after his hand came off the bag, and he struck out attempting to bunt in the tenth inning on Saturday against San Diego.
Prior to having trouble over the weekend in San Diego, Murphy had been throwing brilliantly. In two bullpen appearances against the Padres, he recorded just two outs and walked five hitters. In 14 appearances (20 innings), he had a 3.05 ERA.
