The VMAs revealed Thursday that he will be returning to the stage, but this time without co-hosts Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow from 2022.
For his song “Murdergram Deux,” which features Eminem, he is also vying for the Best Hip Hop prize. The track is off his most recent album, THE FORCE, which was his first in eleven years and was released in September.
After winning his first Moon Person in 1991, LL Cool J has been a VMA champion for a long time. In 1997, he was the first rapper to win the Video Vanguard Award. Additionally, he participated in a celebration for Def Jam Records’ 40th anniversary last year and an all-star homage to hip-hop’s 50th anniversary in 2023.

The 2025 VMAs will be broadcast live from the UBS Arena on Long Island, New York, on September 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Yes, CBS will broadcast the show for the first time. In the US, it will also be simulcast on MTV and streamed on Paramount+.
With 12 nominations, including artist of the year, Lady Gaga is in the lead for this year’s prizes.Bruno Mars, who has eleven nominations, was almost tied with the Mayhem singer. Die with a Smile, the duo’s duet, is nominated for four prizes, including song of the year.
Gaga overtakes Taylor Swift, who had the most nominations for two years. Swift was nominated for one artist of the year this time. In that category, the two are joined by The Weeknd, Morgan Wallen, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonc, and Bad Bunny.
Kendrick Lamar has ten nominations, followed by Gaga and Mars; ROS and Sabrina Carpenter have eight apiece; Ariana Grande and The Weeknd have seven each; and Billie Eilish has six.
With five nominations for her Brat SummersuccessGuess, which features Eilish, Charli XCX also got appreciation.
Tate McRae, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Jelly Roll, Bad Bunny, and Doechii are each nominated four times.
The VMA website is currently accepting fan votes in all 19 categories. With the exception of the best new artist category, which will accept votes for the live show, voting ends on September 5 at 6 p.m. Eastern. Until voting closes, the public may cast up to ten ballots every day.
The Video Vanguard Award winner, performers, presenters, and special guests have not yet been revealed.
Katy Perry received the Video Vanguard Award the previous year. Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Beyonc, and Shakira are among the past honorees.
