A player that the Red Sox have been linked to all season may allegedly join the team after all, despite the fact that they didn’t add any bats before the trade deadline.
The Red Sox are reportedly in negotiations to sign Nathaniel Lowe, a former first baseman for the Washington Nationals, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN and others. Lowe appears set to join a Red Sox lineup that already ranks among MLB’s top scoring offenses after the Nationals designated him for assignment earlier this week.
According to sources, the Boston Red Sox and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe are completing a deal. Earlier this week, Washington DFA’d Lowe, who will now join one of the league’s top lines in Boston.

Although he is now having a hard year, Lowe, 30, has had a great seven-year major league career. He was a member of the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series winning team and has won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger.
Lowe, who was traded from the Rangers to the Nationals this past summer, had a difficult time adjusting to life in Washington. With a.216 batting average, 16 home runs, and a.665 OPS, Lowe has been a sub-replacement level performer (-0.4 wins above replacement). Since the beginning of August, he has gone 3 for 33 in his last 11 games.
Despite having a difficult season, Lowe could still help the Red Sox.
Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have been the Red Sox’s first base duo ever since Triston Casas was out for the season due to a knee injury. Gonzalez has performed admirably and has been especially effective while facing left-handed pitchers, but Toro’s output has decreased following a strong start.

Given that he is a left-handed hitter and has hit 14 home runs with a respectable.732 OPS versus right-handed pitching, Lowe would probably replace Toro as the regular starting first baseman. The Red Sox also hope that the veteran would enjoy a change of scenery and possibly return to his former self in Texas, where he was once one of the best all-around first basemen in the league.
