WooSox relinquish early lead, fall in series finale against Iowa

The Worcester Red Sox held an early lead against Iowa for the second straight game.

However, it was insufficient on Sunday afternoon as the Cubs rallied for an 8-5 comeback victory over Worcester at Principal Park, scoring eight runs in the second and sixth innings.

The Red Sox fell to 61-58 behind starting pitcher Tyler Uberstine, who gave up three earned runs, four hits, four walks, and one strikeout in 2.2 innings.

Jos De Le Len, a right-handed reliever, did not fare any better; in 2.1 innings pitched, he gave up four hits, three earned runs, and two home runs. Worcester left ten runners on base and went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

The Red Sox attack quickly reached the scoreboard thanks to singles from Jhostynxon Garcia, Nathan Hickey, and Chadwick Tromp, who gave the road team a 4-0 lead after one inning.

However, Iowa rallied swiftly, as Caleb Knight was carried home by Forrest Wall’s run-scoring single to center field. Tromp got a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the third inning to put the Red Sox ahead by four, but the enthusiasm was short-lived.

However, Knight (three-run home run) and Hayden Cantrelle (two-run home run) responded with consecutive blasts in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to put Iowa ahead for good, making Worcester’s offensive effort insufficient.

Iowa advanced to 58-61 after outscoring Worcester 11-7 and going 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Garcia is one of Boston’s best prospects and was expected to start at first base in Sunday’s game. The Red Sox started working him out there because they needed someone in that position.

Garcia participated in all five of Worcester’s combined double plays on Sunday in addition to going 1-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Now, starting Tuesday at 6:45 p.m., the Red Sox will host Jacksonville for a six-game series at Polar Park.
