T. Frye, a 31-year-old man from North Carolina, was given a life sentence by a Virginia court for the savage murder of his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend, K. Montgomery. The case, which was characterized by violence, stalking, and obsession, ended in April with Frye’s conviction following an hour-long jury deliberation.
The Murder of K. Montgomery
In October 2022, Montgomery’s life ended tragically. Her roommate discovered her body inside their house, with evidence of a brutal assault. Later, investigators verified that Frye used phone charging wires to strangle her.
The linear marks on her neck, which were evidence of the fight that led to her death, matched the cords that were found wrapped in a blanket on her bed.
Frye’s crime, according to the prosecution, was intentional and motivated by envy. He grew fixated on Montgomery and refused to recognize that their relationship was ended since he was unable to handle the separation.
Obsession Turned Deadly
Frye’s concerning actions in the months preceding the murder were made public during the trial. He bombarded Montgomery with texts, at times pleading for reconciliation and at other times exploding in hatred. He followed her on dating apps and social media, and he even looked up information about her place online.
Together with the abusive messages, prosecutors provided this digital evidence, demonstrating a pronounced pattern of fixation and growing animosity.
Shifting Stories and Lies
According to Frye’s argument, it was improbable that he could have sneaked inside Montgomery’s apartment. Frye first denied ever being in Virginia. He later acknowledged that he was at her apartment building, but he said that he never entered.
He was not believed by the jurors. W. Nance, the Commonwealth’s attorney, emphasized Frye’s dishonesty and digital footprint as crucial pieces of evidence. His phone records and his falsehoods combine to demonstrate his guilt. We wouldn’t be here without the digital evidence, but I believe that his continuous stream of lies to law enforcement played a significant part.
Sentenced to Life in Prison
On Tuesday, Judge J. Updike imposed a life sentence, exceeding Virginia’s recommendations of 22 to 38 years. He described the crime as one of the most unsettling incidents he had ever seen and described it as cold-blooded and premeditated.
After being detained in North Carolina, Frye was sent to Virginia for trial. He will never be freed because of his life sentence.

Family and friends recall Montgomery, a 28-year-old mother of a young kid, as a lively, devoted lady who was renowned for her kindness and fortitude. Although it cannot erase the sorrow of her loss, her family expressed relief at the sentencing and referred to it as a measure of justice.
