On Sunday afternoon, the Worcester Red Sox defeated the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 8-3 at Polar Park to round off their homestand on a strong note.

Worcester’s pitchers gave up just one earned run after Kyle Harrison was left out of his planned start. Justin Slaten followed up Chris Murphy’s three shutout innings with two strikeouts with his own scoreless inning.

In the first, Brian Navarreto, the catcher for the Jumbo Shrimp, made a throwing mistake that let Kristian Campbell score from third base, giving the WooSox the lead right away.

Nathan Hickey’s RBI-triple put the score at 2-0 before the end of the inning.

In the second, Nick Sogard’s sacrifice fly and Campbell’s two-home home run gave Worcester three more runs.

It was 7-0 after Mikey Romeroma hit a two-run home run.

When Connor Norby singled into a fielder’s choice in the top of the sixth, Jacksonville took the lead. Cody Morissette gave the Jumbo Shrimp a 7-2 victory in the seventh inning in a similar fashion.

However, the WooSox were not finished smashing home runs, and Phillip Sikes joined in the fun at the bottom of the seventh inning with a single blast that put Worcester ahead 8–2.

In the top of the eighth, Alex Hoppe hit a solo home run to pull Jacksonville within five runs, but that was as close as the team would get.

The WooSox will start a six-game road trip against the Durham Bulls on Tuesday after taking Monday off.
