Anna Wintour is seeking a new Vogue editor-in-chief but will maintain editorial control

NEW YORK (AP)—Anna Wintouri is leaving her position as editor-in-chief of Vogue, but she will continue to have editorial authority over the legendary publication.

The seasoned Vogue titan informed employees on Thursday that she is looking for a head of editorial content to manage more of the daily tasks. However, she still has a lot of authority that allows her to continue being a powerhouse at the fashion magazine that helped establish her name.

She remarked, “It goes without saying that I intend to remain the tennis and theater editor for Vogue forever.”

Wintour will continue to serve as Vogue’s global editorial director and Cond Nast’s chief content officer. With frantic headlines announcing her resignation from the magazine, the news stunned the fashion industry and Wintour fans on social media. Vogue stated in a statement on its website later Thursday that the new lead will report directly to Wintour, who serves as global editorial director.

Anyone working in the creative industry understands how important it is to keep improving one’s work. Wintour told staff that she was excited to show everyone that there was a fresh, innovative way to envision an American fashion magazine when she took over as editor of Vogue.

She continued, “I now find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of passionate editors storm the field with their own ideas, supported by a new, exciting view of what a major media company can be.”

With the exception of The New Yorker, Wintour will continue to serve as chief content officer for all of Cond Nast’s brands worldwide, including Vogue, Wired, Vanity Fair, GQ, AD, Cond Nast Traveler, Glamour, Bon Apptit, Tatler, World of Interiors, and Allure.

According to a Vogue statement, Wintour will have more time and flexibility to support Cond Nast’s other international markets with the installation of a new editorial chief for Vogue US.

Wintour is also in charge of the annual Met Gala, which is the biggest event in fashion and a significant source of funding for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion division. Additionally, she plans to continue participating in Vogue World, a traveling fashion and cultural event that the magazine launched in 2022.

Cond Nast reorganized its editorial organization four years ago, bringing together editorial teams from all across the world for the first time. A global editorial director oversees the head of editorial content in each market where Cond Nast operates. That restructure includes the new position at American Vogue. Other Vogue publications worldwide have already adopted the new format.

The new director of editorial content will take Wintour’s place at American Vogue instead of the corporation looking for an editor-in-chief.

Throughout her decades at Vogue, Wintour revolutionized the publication. After serving as editor-in-chief of British Vogue from 1985 to 1987, she returned to the American title as editor-in-chief after being appointed creative director in 1983.

By including celebrities on the magazine’s covers and fusing expensive fashion with more accessible street style, she brought the publication up to date. She expanded the brand’s global appeal by introducing new titles and supported up-and-coming designers including John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen.
