California Governor Gavin Newsom is being praised by TV host Bill Maher for taking a daring, Trump-style stance in politics.
The comedian claimed he thought Newsom’s satirical social media tweets about President Donald Trump were hilarious and unlike anything Democrats had ever done before in the August 22 episode of his HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher.
Maher Applauds Newsom s Online Style
“Newsom has understood the way American culture works today,” Maher, 69, said to his panel. Avoid attempting to outsmart others. He joked that you have to outsmart them, implying that exaggeration and comedy are now more important in politics than substantive debates.
Newsom s Shift in Political Strategy
The 57-year-old Newsom has long been considered a potential Democratic presidential front-runner in 2028. Rather than adopting the conventional party style, he has adopted a more combative, Trump-influenced communication style.
The Democratic Party is a new one. During a call with party leaders on August 20, Newsom declared, “This is a new energy all across this country, and we are going to meet fire with fire.”
He emphasized his importance as governor of California, the fourth-largest economy in the world, and added that he wanted to give citizens a new sense of purpose.
Social Media Posts in Trump s Style
Using exaggerated language and comedy, Newsom’s posts on X (previously Twitter) imitate Trump’s well-known online character.
His press office posted on August 20:
Whoa! I, Gavin C. Newsom, am America’s favorite governor, and Fox News won’t stop talking about me! VERY WEIRD, NOT INTERESTED, BUT THANK YOU! JESSE WATTERS KEEP CALLING ME DADDY.
He joked about the Cracker Barrel logo controversy the next day:

Trump Fires Back
After noticing Newsom’s online shenanigans, President Trump ignored them. On August 22, he told reporters, “I know Gavin very well.” He has a good line of (bull) and is an incompetent guy.
Maher s Dinner with Trump
It’s interesting to note that Maher recently spent time with Trump himself. He mentioned a White House meal that singer Kid Rock had organized on an April 11 Real Time show.
Maher acknowledged that he even had Trump sign a list of about 60 insults that Trump has slammed at him over the years. The meeting went better than anticipated, despite their past.
Maher clarified, “The guy I met is not the one who tweeted a bunch of nasty crap about me the night before the dinner.” That person wasn’t residing there when I arrived.
