Boston city councilor calls for ‘hate crime’ investigation into vandalized Virgin Mary statue at South End church

A statue of the Virgin Mary was vandalized with graffiti at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End, and the Boston Police Department is looking into the incident.

The South End is represented by Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, who shared a picture of the vandalism on X Thursday. Flynn said he has spoken with the police department and suggested that the incident be looked into as a hate crime.

Flynn commented on X about the vandalism that was done to the Blessed Mary statue at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross last night. There have been similar attacks on statues in Florida and New York. I suggested that the vandalism be looked into as a hate crime when I spoke with Boston Police.

A spokesman for the Boston Police Department confirmed late Thursday morning that an investigation was underway and that a police report was being prepared.

A representative for the Archdiocese of Boston stated that he would have more to say later because he was only now becoming aware of the destruction.
