Boston The Red Sox will use a new defensive configuration against a right-handed starter on Tuesday night, as Wieler Abreu is still out two days after leaving Sunday’s game due to calf pain.
For the fourth time this season, Boston is starting Masataka Yoshida in left field with Abreu out and Roman Anthony in right. He’s hitting fifth.Nathaniel Lowe, a recent free agency addition to the team, will hit seventh and be the designated hitter. The second baseman is Romy Gonzalez because Ceddanne Rafaela is not playing. Instead of Carlos Narvez, Connor Wong is catching and Abraham Toro is at first base.
Rafaela has been used as the second baseman by manager Alex Cora against right-handed pitchers on a regular basis, but Gonzalez will start for the second consecutive night.Since August 5, Yoshida has not made an outfield start. Late in Monday’s defeat, Lowe made his Sox debut as a pinch hitter and did well in his one plate appearance. Whether Abreu will be added to the injured list is uncertain.
Boston will attempt to keep Baltimore from sweeping the series in two games. Fenway’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
Boston will start right-hander Walker Buehler (7-7, 5.43 ERA) in place of right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (10-5, 4.13 ERA). After months of difficulties, Buehler is thought to be on thin ice in the rotation mix after suffering a defeat in his most recent game last week in Houston.
After taking Wednesday off, the Red Sox will begin a four-game series at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
