My Unexpected Adventure on the Trail
A few years ago, I decided to check out the Old Zoo Nature Trails after hearing rumors about an abandoned zoo near Cisco. I was at Lake Cisco, testing for my scuba diving license, and thought a quick hike might be a nice break. Little did I know, I was in for more than just a peaceful stroll.
I didn’t bring water, sunscreen, or anything that could have helped me out. Within 30 minutes, I was feeling the heat and rugged terrain—this trail definitely isn’t easy. I had to turn back before I could even complete half of it. It wasn’t just a walk in the park; it was tough and unforgiving.
Preparing for the Old Zoo Trail
If you decide to hike this trail, learn from my mistake—come prepared. Bring plenty of water, wear good hiking boots, and pack sunscreen.
While some parts of the trail may seem short, the overgrown brush, stone steps, and remnants of the old zoo create a challenging environment. If you plan to take on the full hike, it’s best to bring a friend who knows the area or is familiar with hiking in rough terrain.
The Ghost of the Cisco Zoo

In addition to animals, it offered a swimming pool and cabin rentals, making it a fun getaway for visitors. Sadly, after a series of tragic animal deaths, the zoo began to decline and eventually shut down. Though the swimming pool remained open for a while, nature began to reclaim the zoo, and it faded into obscurity.
Today, the ruins of the zoo are all that remain. Rusted iron gates, crumbling animal enclosures, and overgrown moss-covered stairs are scattered along the trail, offering a glimpse into a forgotten time. Walking through this eerie site feels like stepping into a place where nature and history collided.
A Local Nonprofit Breathes New Life Into the Trail
Thanks to the efforts of the nonprofit group SAFE (Students, Athletics, Families, and Education), the site was cleared and transformed into a nature trail.
This group worked hard to restore parts of the area, making it more accessible to the public while still maintaining its rugged and adventurous spirit. Today, visitors can walk through the ruins and experience a unique mix of history and nature.
