Terry Rozier is still under federal investigation
into a gambling probe that was announced earlier this year. There was some confusion when it came to the investigation, but
NBA insider Chris Haynes
cleared the air Tuesday, saying that Rozier “has not been cleared of any wrongdoing and remains under federal investigation on a potential gambling probe.”
Part of the confusion came a few weeks ago when
ESPN’s Shams Charania was asked about Rozier on The Pat McAfee Show
. The wording made it sound like the investigation into Rozier was finished, but turns out, that was not the case.
“Terry Rozier, as of right now, has been cleared,” Charania said. “He finished the season with Miami. There’s really nothing active as of right now with him. NBA spokesman Mike Bass did give a statement to me yesterday that the league is cooperating with the federal prosecutors. This is a federal matter now.”
The NBA was again thrust into the spotlight last month when it came to players being under investigation for gambling-related probes. Former Pistons guard Malik Beasley was the latest player to be involved. The league’s notable illegal betting example remains Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA after he admitted to manipulating his game performances for gambling purposes.
Rozier’s investigation is part of a wider government probe connected to the betting scheme involving Porter. His investigation is looking into a game in question on March, 23, 2023, when Rozier was still with the Hornets. The gambling ring accused of conspiring with Porter also bet heavily against Rozier in that game.
Rozier, 31, started his career with the Celtics, playing four seasons in Boston from 2015-19. He played for the Hornets from 2019-24 before getting traded to the Heat, which is where he’s been ever since. Rozier averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 64 games (23 starts) for the Heat last season. Rozier is due $26.6 million this next season in the final year of his contract.
He hasn’t garnered much trade interest
as he struggled this past season.
