Garrett Crochet interested in ‘huge honor’ — if he’s invited and Red Sox let him

BOSTON — Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet was selected to his second straight All-Star Game earlier this week,

though he has decided not to pitch in the game

. He’s hopeful he’ll get another chance to pitch on a global stage next spring.

Crochet is interested in pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic in March, he said Friday, though he has not had any talks with the team’s manager, Mark DeRosa.

“I haven’t heard anything,” Crochet said. “I don’t know how it works or when people reach out. Obviously, it would be a huge honor. I’d hope the organization would view it as an honor as well. If I was asked, I’d definitely enjoy participating and I’d love to participate. But right now, my focus is on continuing to build on the season I’ve had.”

Teams participating in the 2026 WBC, which runs from March 15-17, are in the early stages of building their rosters. Team USA has gotten three commitments from superstars as Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, Pirates ace Paul Skenes and Royals standout Bobby Witt Jr. have already said they will play.

The Red Sox should have various representatives in the tournament with Jarren Duran and Marcelo Mayer (Mexico), Ceddanne Rafaela (Netherlands), Abraham Toro (Canada), Aroldis Chapman (Great Britain or USA) and Masataka Yoshida (Japan) among the early candidates to participate. The Red Sox have not had a player represent the United States in the tournament since 2013, when Shane Victorino played.
