With temperatures expected to hit 98 degrees Fahrenheit and heat index readings rising to 103 degrees, residents in Hastings and central Nebraska are being alerted of dangerously high temperatures on Saturday.

A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service to warn of the elevated risk of heat-related diseases for people who spend time outside in the afternoon.

Dangerous Conditions on Saturday

With gusts of up to 25 mph, south winds of 10 to 15 mph will exacerbate the already unbearable heat. People should restrict their outside activities, drink enough of water, and keep an eye on those who are at risk, such as the elderly, young children, and pets, according to emergency officials.

Sunday Forecast and Storm Chances

With highs of about 94 degrees Fahrenheit, the heat will persist into Sunday. There is a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms late Sunday night into Monday, though, which might provide some areas—particularly those near the Platte River Valley—with momentary respite.
