In Red Sox lineup, Masataka Yoshida the odd man out vs. Phillies ace Monday night

PHILADELPHIA —

Sunday represented Masataka Yoshida’s first start in the outfield since the end of the 2023 season

. A day later, he’ll get a chance to rest his legs as the Red Sox start the second half of their tough two-series road trip at Citizens Bank Park.

Yoshida is Boston’s odd man out against the Phillies and ace Zack Wheeler in the opener of a three-game series Monday. For the second straight game, Roman Anthony is Boston’s designated hitter. Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu are starting in the outfield.

Yoshida has hit .273 with two doubles and a .668 OPS in seven games since coming off the injured list and making his season debut July 9.

The Red Sox will face another tough test against the Phillies (56-43) after losing two of three to the Cubs but salvaging the series with a comeback win Sunday. It’ll be veteran Walker Buehler on the mound for the Red Sox against Wheeler, a three-time All-Star who owns a 2.36 ERA in 19 starts this year. Alex Bregman is hitting second for Boston after his pinch-hit heroics Sunday. Carlos Narváez is catching and hitting eighth. Abraham Toro is at first base.

The Red Sox are 12-3 in July so far and enter the day tied with Seattle for the second American League wild card spot. Monday’s first pitch is at 6:45 p.m. ET.
