Isabel Brozena was certain she could win the 122nd Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship after winning the first two holes.
And she did precisely that.
At Concord Country Club, Friday’s temperatures were significantly lower than those of the tournament’s opening four days. However, Brozena, a student at Xavier University and a native of North Reading, continued her impressive play by defeating Thorny Lea Golf Club’s 42-year-old Shannon Johnson, 2 up.
Johnson came back to win the fifth hole, but Brozena, playing for Andover’s Indian Ridge CC, took the sixth and seventh holes to grab a three-shot lead. By winning Nos. 10 and 11, Johnson gave Brozena a scare, and she then won No. 15 to equalize the score.
However, Brozena remained composed and ended the match with victories of 16 and 18. Johnson won the medal at 6-under after two days of stroke play, while Brozena finished third at 3-under.
