Marcelo Mayer feared surgery would be needed ‘when I hurt’ wrist in late July

Boston It wasn’t until Saturday evening that the official announcement was made, and it wasn’t made public until Sunday morning.

However, Marcelo Mayer had a suspicion that surgery would be necessary to fix his right wrist when he originally hurt it in Philadelphia during the latter week of July.

Shortly after Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that Mayer’s season was officially finished and that season-ending surgery was scheduled for sometime next week, Mayer stated, “I gave it my all, obviously, with my options given.” I could have had surgery when I originally hurt it, or we could have had the cortisone shot and I would have done everything I could to have a chance at playing again.

However, this is simply the hand I’m now given. When I injured it, I assumed surgery would be required. By no means did it feel good. I had a cortisone shot after doing it in 22. After receiving a cortisone injection, the issue typically recurs later. I therefore understood that I would eventually have to take action. I was aware that surgery would be considered.

Mayer has seen an early season ending due to injury for the fourth consecutive season.

In 2022, he had a similar, albeit less severe, TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) wrist injury. His season was cut short by a left shoulder injury a year later, and he missed the last two months of 2024 due to a lumbar strain in his lower back.

“It’s awful,” Mayer added. For someone who is so passionate about this game, all I want to do is play and be out there every day—especially in the major leagues where the playoffs are crucial. All I need to do is go out there, keep working hard, and attempt to return stronger than before.

Mayer made multiple attempts to recover from the injuries. Last week, when the squad was in San Diego, he started playing baseball in small doses and was able to handle light catch. However, I was unable to do much when he tried to throw more than sixty feet. Furthermore, even dry swings are painful. Thus, there isn’t much to offer. After a few successful days, I kind of hit a wall, so the shot didn’t really accomplish much.

Mayer says the streak of season-ending injuries is annoying.

He remarked, “I just want to be out there playing.” I make every effort to position my body as optimally as possible. Of course, such incidents do occur in baseball. All I’m trying to do is remain positive and work hard this summer.

However, Mayer insisted that he is not concerned about how his career has been slowed by the injuries.

I am aware that I am a player. That’s not really anything I’m worried about, Mayer added, because I have complete faith in my abilities.

Despite the injuries, Mayer said 2025 was a fantastic year. I’ve always wanted to play in the major leagues, and I did. Since my season was so short, I obviously couldn’t accomplish all of the things I wanted to. The only thing that matters, though, is that this club is truly unique, and I believe we have a strong enough squad to have a strong postseason run. I will be supporting them throughout the entire process since it is all that matters to me.

It is anticipated that he will be fully recovered in time for spring training, with a three-month recovery period. Staying with the team for the rest of the season is the plan.
