According to police, three teenagers from Middlesex County are being charged with shouting homophobic epithets at many individuals in Provincetown.
In relation to the Tuesday incident in Cape Town, Ryan Mahimtura of Framingham and Henry Ward of Hudson, both 19 years old, as well as another minor, have been charged with two charges of disorderly conduct.
According to a police statement, they allegedly drove across town threateningly while honking their air horns and shouting homophobic epithets at multiple individuals. It is possible to file further charges.
Early on Monday morning, there was also a potential hate crime assault in P-town.
While strolling in the east end of Bradford Street, the victim reported being accosted by three males who had gotten out of a car. The inquiry into that alleged assault is still ongoing.
In order to help search for suspicious and potentially dangerous activities and maintain a noticeable presence in the community during this hectic holiday week, the Police Department will have more officers on duty throughout the course of the next several days, according to a police statement.
Police also urged residents and guests to remain alert and contact 9-1-1 right away to report any suspicious or threatening activity.
Alex Morse, the town manager, emphasized that hate will not be accepted in Provincetown.
Morse wrote, “We share the fear and discomfort these events are causing in our community, and they are disturbing.” These events are being investigated by the Provincetown and Town Police Departments, who take them very seriously.
He stated that police were able to swiftly find the car, identify the suspects, and press charges after receiving a report of someone shouting homophobic epithets at people from their car yesterday, July 1. This incident demonstrates the significance of promptly reporting information to law enforcement. The prompt action taken by our police department should serve as a reminder to anyone who comes here to hurt others that Provincetown will not put up with this kind of behavior.
