CAA Hawthorne Ida Brockman, 34, and Malachi Whalen, 33, were recently found guilty of the assault, torture, and killing of Brockman’s 7-year-old daughter, A Miya D., a number of years prior.
A Los Angeles County jury convicted both defendants on July 2 of torturing and killing A Miya. Whalen was found guilty of assault on a child resulting in death, while Brockman was also found guilty of child abuse causing death. September is when they are scheduled to be sentenced.
The Brutal Crime
According to the prosecution, A Miya was severely tortured, beaten, and killed by Brockman and Whalen at their Hawthorne home on September 9, 2021. They first attempted to hold A Miya’s biological father accountable for the crime, but Brockman eventually admitted to doing so.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the young child had sustained more than 58 separate injuries, including several cracked ribs, blunt force trauma, severe burns, a collapsed lung, and other severe internal ailments.
Statement from District Attorney
In a statement, District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the case’s tragedy, adding, “This was a case that shook us all to our core.”
It is very horrifying that A Miya, a helpless 7-year-old girl, was brutally murdered by her own mother and her mother’s lover. We are appreciative that the jury found both offenders guilty and held them responsible for their brutality.
