The death of a teenage boy at Lake Winnipesaukee is being looked into by New Hampshire police.
On a boat with three ladies, the 17-year-old boy—whom the police are not yet identifying due to his age—became immersed in the water on Friday afternoon. He never reappeared.
Just around 12:50 p.m., the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol received a 911 call informing them of the event. The Gilford Police Department helped with the reaction, according to the agency.
The police claim that the child went into the water to recover a bag that had gone overboard in the Broads portion of the lake, which is close to the Diamond and Rattlesnake islands.
According to an NHSP statement, the teenager seemed to struggle to swim in the turbulent water caused by heavy gusts, eventually disappeared, and did not emerge again.
Initial attempts by the NHSP Marine Patrol and Gilford and Alton fire department crews failed to locate the boy. The New Hampshire Fish & Game Dive Unit found the boy’s body Thursday shortly after 7 p.m.
