Red Sox’ Alex Cora on Kristian Campbell: ‘He’s still a work in progress’

BOSTON: At Triple-A Worcester, Christian Campbell is now on an 11-game hitting streak. In his last seven games, he has 13 hits, including two home runs.

Following a prolonged slump, the 23-year-old was relegated to Worcester on June 20 by the Red Sox.After hitting.902 OPS in 29 games to win AL Rookie of the Month for March/April, he went on to hit.154 (20-for-130) in 39 games between April 30 and June 18.

A large portion of Campbell’s time has been devoted learning first base in Worcester.

Before Boston’s game against the Astros on Friday, manager Alex Cora stated that there is still work to be done. He’s still a developing person. He has improved. The figures demonstrate that. We still need to improve on a couple of things under the hood.

Cora stated that he needs to do better in several areas, both defensively and offensively.

Craig Breslow, the chief baseball officer, neglected to address Campbell’s potential to play a significant role at first base in the closing days of the season.

Boston’s first base OPS (.702) put them 20th out of 31 MLB clubs as of Friday.Despite having only 10 hits in his last 55 at-bats, Abraham Toro is starting the game and batting cleanup on Friday.

With Worcester, Campbell has made 17 starts at first base. After Triston Casas suffered a season-ending ruptured patellar tendon in early May, he started studying how to play this position.

Campbell stated on Tuesday that he has been primarily practicing at first base, where he is focusing on improving his footwork and defense. Things have been going well. Over there, I feel rather at ease. Over there, I think I’ve been doing fairly well.
