Red Sox announce Friday starter, plus when Dustin May will make club debut

The Red Sox revealed their updated rotation for this weekend’s series against the Astros one day after the trade deadline. It includes the date of newcomer Dustin May’s club debut.

Walker Buehler will throw Saturday afternoon, with lefty Colton Gordon heading to Houston, while right-hander Cooper Criswell will start Friday night’s game against All-Star righty Hunter Brown. Lucas Giolito will take on lefty Framber Valdez in Sunday’s series finale, which is scheduled at 11:35 a.m.

In order to allow Garrett Crochet more time to relax, the Red Sox had scheduled TBD for Friday. Criswell, who hasn’t made a big league start in 2025 but has a 5.06 ERA in six bullpen appearances for the Red Sox this season, will take that place. He has pitched in 14 games (13 starts) for the WooSox, going 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA.

On Saturday, Buehler will throw as planned. May was initially scheduled to pitch the series finale, which is a morning start because it’s an exclusive Roku game. May last threw for the Dodgers on Sunday (at Fenway Park, btw).

Alex Cora agreed to Giolito’s request to pitch on Sunday because he was concerned that it would be too lengthy of a layoff to throw in the Kansas City series.

Crochet is scheduled for Tuesday, May for Wednesday, and Brayan Bello for Monday.

Prior to the deadline, the Red Sox shipped prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard to Los Angeles for May and acquired lefty reliever Steven Matz from the Cardinals for infield prospect Blaze Jordan.
