Red Sox prospectOn Sunday, Jhostynxon Garcia will make his Triple-A Worcester first base debut at Des Moines against the Iowa Cubs.
A few weeks ago, Garcia, who goes by the well-known moniker “The Password,” started working out at first base and mastering the position.
In his professional career, the 22-year-old right-handed batter has started 38 games at DH, 206 minor league games in center field, 82 games in right field, and 20 games in left field.
The Red Sox started working him out there because they needed help at first base. First base might be Garcia’s best route to the majors because Boston has a lot of outfielders.
This season, the first basemen for Boston have struggled, batting a combined.238 with a.296 on-base percentage,.392 slugging percentage, and.688 OPS. Garcia might end up filling this role in the future.
Nathaniel Lowe, a left-handed hitter and 2023 Gold Glove winner with Texas, was just designated for assignment and released by the Nationals, and the Red Sox are anticipated to be in the running for his services.
Down the stretch, Kristian Campbell can potentially be used at first base. Since being optioned to Worcester by the Red Sox, he has started 24 games at the position.
In Worcester’s 9-5 victory over the Cubs on Saturday, Garcia went 4-for-4. In 64 games (286 plate appearances), he is hitting.309 with a.372 on-base percentage,.578 slugging percentage,.950 OPS, 17 home runs, 12 doubles, three triples, and 55 RBIs with the WooSox.
