Red Sox roster: Right-handed hitting outfielder/infielder en route to Boston

Boston Several reports claim that Red Sox 40-man Nate Eaton, a right-handed hitting infielder/outfielder, is on his way to Boston.

In the seventh inning of Sunday’s Triple-A Worcesters 8-5 defeat to Iowa in Des Moines, Eaton was lifted.

A comparable step has not yet been decided, according to two sources. Until the Red Sox decide what other roster move (or moves) to make, Eaton is now on standby. Although it’s not a given, Eaton is probably going to play in Monday’s Boston game against the Orioles at Fenway Park.

A tight right calf forced right fielder Wilyer Abreu to leave Boston’s 5-3 loss to the Marlinson on Sunday.Abreu stated that while he anticipates staying off the injured list, it would likely take him two or three days to be ready to play again.

On Monday, the Red Sox may be waiting to see how Abreu feels. Eaton might replace Abreu if his calf gets worse and he has to go on the IL.

As an alternative, Eaton might replace catcher Ali Sanchez on the team. Since last Monday, Boston has used Snchez as a third catcher, but in six games, he has only made one plate appearance. He would need to be assigned because he has no further minor league alternatives.

This season, the 28-year-old Eaton has made 14 appearances for Boston, batting leadoff four times. With two doubles, one RBI, five runs, one walk, and ten strikeouts, he is 6-for-24 (.250).

In 94 games (400 plate appearances) this season, Eaton is hitting.290 with a.373 on-base percentage,.483 slugging percentage,.856 OPS, 12 home runs, 25 doubles, three triples, 55 RBIs, and 15 steals for Worcester.
