Red Sox’ ‘work in progress’ from Devers trade allows 1 hit in 5 scoreless for WooSox

HOUSTONIn Triple-A Worcester’s 1-0 loss to Iowa on Wednesday, Kyle Harrison, the left-handed starter the Red Sox acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade, gave up just one hit in five scoreless innings.

Despite his effectiveness, the 24-year-old struggled with control, walking four hitters and striking out eight.

In his last two starts (10 innings), Harrison has held opponents to three hits and no runs. In nine starts for the WooSox, his ERA stands at 3.48. With 24 walks in 41 innings, command has been a problem.

Following Harrison’s start on Wednesday, manager Alex Cora stated that it was still a work in progress. And we think he can accomplish it here if necessary. The people here, however, make us feel at ease in our current situation. However, he is a possibility.

Harrison averaged 93.7 mph and topped out at 95.4 mph while throwing 49 fastballs. He had five fastball swings and misses, four slider swings, and two slurve swings. He threw his changeup eight times and received no whiffs.

“We are aware of how distinctive his fastball is,” Cora stated. I don’t want to go into specifics, but we’re still working on a lot of these stuff. However, we are more complex than most people realize. He’s involved and simply pleased that he’s moving in the correct path.
