Top Red Sox prospect makes debut at 1B with WooSox

One of the Red Sox’s best prospects is being given a chance to show that he belongs in the mix as the team continues to look for possible first base options.

Jhostynxon Garcia, who is presently listed by MLB Pipeline as Boston’s third-best prospect, made his first appearance at first base for the WooSox on Sunday. This weekend was the outfielder’s first time playing first in a game; he had just started taking grounders at the position.

Garcia, who was initially signed as a 2019 international free agency, emerged as one of the Red Sox system’s best prospects the previous season and has since risen through the ranks. Garcia was promoted to Triple-A in late May and has since dominated, hitting.309 with 17 home runs, 55 RBI, and a.950 OPS in his first 64 games with the WooSox. He was given the nickname “The Password” because of his unusual first name.

With so many outfielders already on the roster, the right-handed hitter’s path to the major leagues was clogged despite his output. He might be able to get into the major leagues as early as this September if he adds first base to his repertoire.

Red Sox first basemen Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have hit together since Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury on May 2.255 with an OPS of.722.
